History of the Victorian Conveyancers Association Back

In Victoria, independent conveyancers began practising in the early 1980s. For the first time this offered Victorian consumers the freedom of choice for conveyancing services that had existed in some Australian States for many years.

The competitive open market resulted in the cost of conveyancing reducing to one third of the amount paid in the early 1980s when solicitors dominated the industry.

The Victorian Conveyancers' Association (VCA) was formed in 1989 by a small group of caring independent conveyancing practitioners.

The VCA was incorporated in 1991 with a Charter to promote and monitor high standards of professional service and ethics among independent non-lawyer conveyancers.

The Institute is managed by a Board of Directors elected annually.

The VCA became the Victorian Division of the Australian Institute of Conveyancers in 1997 and is now known as the Australian Institute of Conveyancers (Victorian Division) Inc.

In March 1998 the Institute launched the Certified Practising Conveyancers (CPC) program to set professional and ethical standards for the industry in Victoria.

The Institute has initiated a wide range of education and training programs to improve the conveyancing and business skills of practitioners. Many of these programs are now based on the accredited certificate, diploma and degree courses offered by Victorian tertiary institutes.

A professional development program of seminars, workshops and newsletters keep our Members up-to-date with statutory legislative and other changes relevant to conveyancing practise.

In February 1998, the Institute launched the new specialist Diploma of Business in Conveyancing Practice course with RMIT University.

The Institute maintains close links with Victorian Government regulatory authorities and professional bodies and provides input by way of consultancy into conveyancing and conveyancing reforms such as electronic conveyancing.
